A Unique Perspective on Women and Cancer- A Food for Thought

On this Women's Day, it's essential to recognise the unique challenges women face regarding cancer in India. While the number of cancer patients and survivors continues to grow worldwide due to innovative medical and technological advances, the experience of cancer often differs significantly between men and women.
The latest statistical data reveals that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among Indian women compared to lung cancer in Indian males. One in 29 Indian women may develop breast cancer in her lifetime.
Beyond the numbers, a woman's cancer journey is deeply influenced by the healthcare system and the unique challenges she faces, often as the primary caregiver and source of support for her family. A breast or gynecologic cancer diagnosis may also lead to a perceived loss of "womanhood" and related body image concerns. Historical inequality, cultural perceptions, attitudes, and implicit biases can also impact how female cancer patients interact with the healthcare system, complicating shared decision-making and creating psychosocial barriers to quality care delivery.
As we celebrate Women's Day, we must recognise the unique challenges women face in the fight against cancer. With rising incidence rates and the distinct impact of cancer on women's health and well-being, awareness, early detection, and personalised care are more critical than ever. Raising awareness becomes essential since lack of understanding is the cause of many cancer-related fatalities among Indian women. The stigma related to gynecological cancers still runs deep in Indian society and needs urgent addressing.
By creating a supportive healthcare environment that addresses the specific needs of women with cancer, we can improve outcomes and improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Together, we can work towards a future where every woman receives the compassionate care she deserves in her battle against cancer.
