Breast Cancer Awareness - Empowering Women in India

moc-detail

Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed every October, holds a special significance globally, but especially so in India. In a country where breast cancer is becoming increasingly prevalent, this awareness month serves as a vital campaign to educate, empower, and inspire action.

Let's delve into why Breast Cancer Awareness Month is so crucial in India and the key messages every woman should know.

The Significance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is celebrated worldwide to raise awareness about breast cancer, promote early detection, and support those affected by the disease. In India, it holds immense importance due to several reasons:

  1. Rising Incidence: Breast cancer has become the most common cancer among Indian women, surpassing cervical cancer. India is on an alarming trajectory where breast cancer is concerned. In 2016, the number of Indians with diagnosed breast cancer was estimated to be 1,18,000. As per the latest data, India accounted for 13.5% of all breast cancer cases across the world and 10.6% of all breast cancer related deaths. The numbers are alarming, emphasizing the urgency of awareness.
  2. Early Detection: Nearly 60% of breast cancer cases in Indians are detected at advanced stages (stage III or IV), resulting in lower survival rates. A recent study conducted in Mumbai showed that clinical breast exam conducted every 2 years in women aged 50 and more led to a reduction of breast cancer related mortality by about 30%. Raising awareness about early detection can save lives.
  3. Stigma and Myths: Myths related to the contagion of cancer and the fear that a cancer diagnosis could impact the family’s reputation are highly prevalent in the Indian society, especially in rural areas. A study conducted in India found that many women believed that breast problems were a result or a reflection of poor character and this further contributed towards hiding symptoms. This awareness month aims to dispel such myths, reduce stigma, and encourage open conversations.

Key Messages for Breast Cancer Awareness

  • Early Detection Saves Lives: The most crucial message is the importance of early detection. Regular breast self-exams, clinical breast exams, and mammograms can help detect breast cancer at an early, treatable stage.

  • Know Your Risk: Understanding your personal risk factors, such as family history, genetics, and lifestyle choices, can empower you to take proactive steps for your breast health.

  • Regular Screening: Women should adhere to recommended screening guidelines, including mammograms and clinical breast exams, as advised by healthcare professionals.

  • Breast Self-Examinations: Every woman should learn how to perform breast self-examinations correctly and make it a regular habit. Any unusual changes should be promptly reported to a healthcare provider.
  • Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle by limiting alcohol consumption, staying physically active, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding hormone replacement therapy can reduce breast cancer risk.
  • Access to Healthcare: Advocate for improved access to healthcare, especially in underserved areas, to ensure that all women have the opportunity for early detection and treatment.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month serves as a beacon of hope and knowledge, reminding women in India and around the world that they can take control of their breast health. By spreading awareness, dispelling myths, and fostering a culture of proactive health management, we can strive towards a future where breast cancer is detected early, treated effectively, and survival rates are significantly improved. This October, let's empower ourselves and our loved ones with knowledge and action in the fight against breast cancer.
