Dismantling Stigma: A Crucial Step for Better Cancer Care in India.
Despite significant medical advancements, cancer remains a leading cause of death in India. However, a significant barrier to improving outcomes lies not in medical technology, but in societal attitudes and behaviours. Stigma associated with cancer is a major concern, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment, ultimately affecting survival rates.
The Roots of Stigma
A 2019 study published in the Oncology Journal of India1 highlights the complex web of factors contributing to cancer stigma in India. Cultural beliefs, misconceptions about the disease, and a lack of awareness all play a role.
Cancer symptoms and the body part that is affected also contribute to the stigma which can manifest in social isolation, discrimination, and psychological distress for patients and their families. The fear of societal rejection often leads to delayed diagnosis, as individuals postpone seeking medical help due to shame or fear of being ostracized.
A Multi-Pronged Approach to Combat Cancer Related Stigmas
Addressing this issue requires a multi-pronged approach. Here are some key strategies:
- Awareness Campaigns: Public awareness campaigns featuring cancer survivors sharing their experiences are crucial. These campaigns can dispel myths, reduce fear, and normalize conversations about the disease. Such campaigns can be effective in reducing stigma and increasing help-seeking behaviors.
- Education and Integration: Integrating cancer education into broader health and wellness programs can encourage open discussions about the disease and its treatment. This can help normalize cancer and alleviate anxieties associated with it.
- Community Engagement: Reaching a wider audience, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, requires community engagement. Empowering community health workers to educate the public about early detection practices can significantly improve overall awareness and encourage timely action.
- Creating a Supportive Environment: By dismantling the stigma surrounding cancer, we can create a more supportive and understanding environment for patients. This shift is essential for improving outcomes and ensuring that individuals receive the care and support they need during their treatment journey.
M | O | C Cancer Care & Research Centre takes an active role in addressing societal barriers by organising and participating in various cancer awareness campaigns across the country. Screening camps, diagnostic workshops, disease awareness talks and events and other activities conducted by M | O | C are vital step towards enhancing the effectiveness of cancer care in India. By prioritizing awareness, education, and community engagement, we can empower individuals to overcome their anxieties, seek timely diagnosis, and access the treatment they deserve.
