Effective Testicular Cancer Treatment: Catching it Early for Better Outcomes

Testicular cancer is a type of cancer that affects the testicles (male reproductive organs) of men between the ages of 20 and 34. Although it has relatively low prevalence in India, it still remains a cause of concern, due to low rates of diagnosis.
The most common signs of testicular cancer are:
1) Swelling, lump or fluid build-up in the scrotum or a testicle
2) A feeling of heaviness, pain or discomfort in the scrotum or a testicle
3) A dull pain or ache in the lower abdomen or groin
4) Shrinking testicle size
Although these symptoms do occur with other conditions too, it is important to get examined by an oncologist to be sure. Any delay in diagnosis can lead to further spread of the cancer cells, which makes the condition difficult to treat.
Testicular Cancer Treatment
Once testicular cancer is diagnosed, prompt treatment is a must. Treatment options include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy as well as immunotherapy, which is an advance and effective form of cancer treatment.
Surgery is the most common form of testicular cancer treatment, irrespective of the stage or type of cancer. Radiation is usually done after the surgery to prevent the tumour from returning and involves using high dose X-rays to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy is an effective treatment method where drugs are used to kill cancer cells. Studies show that chemotherapy is a highly effective testicular cancer treatment and can even be used to treat cancers that have returned / recurred.
The latest in testicular cancer treatment is the use of immunotherapy. This is a modern method of treatment for patients with advanced disease and poor prognosis.
It is unfortunate that many people are unaware of the symptoms of testicular cancer and still others are embarrassed to talk about it and seek medical help. Testicular cancer treatment is easily available with most oncology institutes and the condition can be cured if diagnosed and treated early.
We at Mumbai Oncocare are doing our bit to raise awareness about this condition and encourage young men to proactively perform regular self-exams and talk to an oncology specialist if they notice abnormalities.
